Contractor Ratcliff Construction is expected to start work on the new Central Louisiana Technical Community College campus off Murray Street in Alexandria in the next week or two. It’s been nearly 3 years since groundbreaking at the site. Chancellor Jimmy Sawtelle at a press conference Tuesday said that the new campus will be operating for the fall semester of 2019. It’s expected the current campus location on South Mac Arthur Drive will be sold once the new campus is operational.
Sad news yesterday with the announced passing of a true Louisiana Music Legend, G.G. Shinn. Family members announced on Facebook yesterday that G.G. had passed shortly before 3 in the afternoon. Shinn was a member of the iconic Boogie Kings where he was the band's featured trumpeter and lead vocalist. In his later years Shinn was the owner of the local G.G.'s nightclub in Alexandria. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. G.G. Shinn would have been 79 later this month.
CHRISTUS Health announced Tuesday that Nancy Hellyer, president and CEO of CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini, will depart the health system on Sept. 28. She will be replaced by Chris Karam, who has been named senior vice president of group operations and president and CEO of CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Health System in Alexandria.
The State police report Two Monroe residents died Monday night in a two-car crash in Winn Parish. The report states that 61 year old Vincent Trotter lost control of his pickup on U.S. 84, and he crossed the center line, striking another pickup being driven by 41 year old Bobby Ray McLarty of Winnfield. Both Trotter and his only passenger, 52-year-old Wanda Jenson, died at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts. McLarty who was also wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
LaSalle parish authorities report a man has been charged with the shooting of an Ola man over the weekend. The LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Office booked 30 year old James Rosier of Summerville Tuesday on charges of second degree murder in the death of 49 year old Sherwood Breithaupt.
LSU is offering a new option for buying football tickets, formerly one of the hottest commodities in Louisiana before high definition TV's and other changes shook up the ticket marketplace. The offer, called the flex pass, costs $360 for seven vouchers that can be redeemed for any of the seven regular-season games in Tiger Stadium.
Seat locations vary, and only two vouchers can be used for the season's highest-profile games — Georgia on Oct. 13 and Alabama on Nov. 3. Tickets will be delivered digitally to cell phones 24 hours before the game.
A government report says gasoline demand is nearing an all-time high and that’s causing prices to rise at the pump. The current statewide average for a gallon of regular fuel is $2.61, the most expensive August price since 2014. AAA Fuel Analyst Don Redman says the refineries are working near full capacity right now. He adds being in the height of hurricane season is a big concern. The statewide average for a gallon of gasoline was $2.16 a year ago.
An Amazon distribution center that will be built near the Airline Highway-Interstate 12 intersection in Baton Rouge will reportedly create hundreds of full-time jobs, with salaries of up to $25 an hour. Amazon officials said Tuesday the 21,000-square foot facility will help speed up deliveries for customers. It will collect packages that come from larger Amazon centers that need to go “the last mile” into the hands of customers.
The state’s top gambling regulator confirms that three riverboat casinos are interested in expanding their operations on land, which is now legal as a result of legislation passed during the regular session. Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Jones spoke at the Baton Rouge Press Club. The gaming control board estimates nearly 22,000 jobs are tied to the riverboat casino industry in the state.
The Louisiana State Police has applied for two federal grants to fund improvements to school safety after a series of school shootings earlier this year. Governor John Bel Edwards, speaking at Mckinley High School in Baton Rouge, says if awarded, the grants will fund projects highlighted by a joint commission. Edwards says the commission’s research team is busy compiling reports on every school in the state.
Edwin Edwards turned 91 Tuesday. The former four-term governor says he’s in good spirits and health, and looking forward to spending many more years with wife, 39-year-old Trina Edwards and their five-year-old son Eli.
A US Census Bureau report says coastal counties and parishes along the Gulf of Mexico have seen an increase of 3 million people, or 24.5%, between 2000 and 2016. The US itself has grown by nearly 15-percent over the same time. Demographer Greg Rigamer says with the exception of 2005, a year that saw an intense hurricane season, every year since 2000 has shown growth, despite the threat of danger from natural disasters.
The search continues for a missing boater in Lake Pontchartrain. 32-year-old Sadie Thibodeaux turned up missing on Sunday after an unmanned sailboat was found in the water. New Orleans Police Department Third District Commander Jeff Walls says at this point it’s a missing person’s case, but homicide unit detectives are assisting in the investigation. The hunt moves forward on the south shore of the lake.
A report from a team of LSU Health New Orleans and St. George University scientists indicates obese women may be able to prevent their children from falling prey to adolescent obesity by eating a healthy diet when pregnant. LSU School of Public Health Professor Dr. Richard Scribner says if further research confirms the results, you can add high sugar, processed foods to the list of no go’s for pregnant women.
An Oak Grove police officer has resigned following his arrest on charges of rape on a teenager. Authorities made the arrest following an investigation stemming from a complaint received in July pertaining to the now former officer. TheState police investigation is ongoing.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office reports a former volunteer firefighter from Ponchatoula hid video cameras in the women's restroom of a Tangipahoa firehouse and inside his own home 42 year old James Vining was initially arrested July 24 on video voyeurism and multiple drug counts, but he now faces additional charges as the investigation continues.
A state judge on Tuesday denied a request to move the trial of a black man whose attorney claimed that a Confederate statue outside the East Feliciana courthouse is a symbol of “oppression and racial intolerance” and that his client couldn’t get a fair trial there. In her ruling from the bench Tuesday, District Judge Kathryn Jones pointed out that the attorney filed his motion for the change of venue too late.
Dixie Beer is back, and in a big way. The century-old New Orleans company, bought last year by Saints owner Tom Benson and now led by his widow, Gayle Benson, unveiled plans Tuesday to open an 80,000-square-foot brewery and restaurant in New Orleans East. Backers hope the project will not only help revive the historic brand but also serve as a catalyst for economic development in the hard-hit neighborhood.
